NDNA Chief Executive Purnima Tanuku OBE said:

"Free milk for nursery children is an important initiative which makes a valuable contribution to children's health, particularly disadvantaged children.

"We are pleased the Government has reached a decision on how to deliver the scheme and have also taken into account issues such as administrative burdens highlighted in NDNA's response to the consultation. We will be keen to see how these burdens will be minimised by the new process.

"It is important under the direct delivery scheme preferred by the Government, that nurseries still have control over the type of milk they receive. Some may prefer to source locally or need to meet different cultural or dietary needs. Under the current scheme they can find a supplier to suit and this must be taken into account during the tender process.

"With demand expected to grow as more children, especially two-year-olds, take up nursery places ensuring a reliable, system of delivery along with freedom of choice must be at the forefront as we move to putting the new scheme into practice."
