NDNA Chief Executive Purnima Tanuku OBE said: “We are very pleased with the report issued today by the National College of Teaching and Leadership outlining details of what will be expected for the new Early Years Teachers and Early Years Educators.

“We fully support the idea of simplified professional qualifications which will give the early years workforce the status which is easily understood by parents and people coming into the profession.

“All changes come with new challenges and proper thought must be given to what support the sector will need to achieve the new qualifications and the pay and conditions that reflect their merit.  The delivery of training, which was highlighted by the Nutbrown Review, has been a weakness in the past and getting this right will be a crucial element to making these new plans work.

“It is particularly pleasing to see the Department for Education has listened to the response from the sector and recognises what an important role play has in early years. It is highlighted by the Minister’s comments as she talks about the benefits of a number of teacher-led activities, structured group activities and free play and exploration.

“These new qualifications are an important step on the way to developing the world class workforce we want in early years. The next step is to make sure we have the pay to match this and puts the early years workforce on a genuinely level playing field with schools.”
